Obverse depicts cradle (berceau) of the Prince Imperial, only son of Napoléon III and Eugénie de Montijo, surrounded by the inscription "LA VILLE DE PARIS OFFRE A L'EMPEREUR ET L'IMPERATRICE LE BERCEAU DU PRINCE IMPERIAL"
Cast inscription below "XVI MARS MDCCCLVI / FLUCTUAT NEC MERGITUR (the Latin motto from the arms of the City of Paris "[she] is rocked but does not sink.") Ground features bees.
Verso depicts allegory of two winged female figures floating above a baby resting on a pillow and supported by an eagle “N" with a bull and ram in ribbon below. Inscription around scene reads: "PACATUMQUE REGET PATRIIS VIRTUTIBUR ORBEM".
Cast below to left "J. CAVELIERE SCULPTEUR" and right: "VAUTHIER GALLE GRAVEUR"
