For the series “Back and Forth Disco”, the photographer Farah al Qasimi turned her lens to the richly textured, multicultural, and idiosyncratic life of New York City. After moving there in 2018, al Qasimi found herself drawn to the “visual excesses” of her new home. Born in Abu Dhabi, al Qasimi discovered and photographed those vibrant manifestations of multiculturalism wherever she encountered them, but especially adorning the businesses and bodies of fellow immigrants. From the bold hijab of Woman in a Leopard Print and the range of hairstyles on offer in 5 Star Barber Shop, to the use of mirrors as framing devices, the photographs celebrate the self-fashioning of the global citizen, while the artist’s distinctly modern and materialist aesthetic extols a globalized society. In 2020, selections from this series were exhibited on 100 bus shelters across the five boroughs of New York City.
