Portland-based artist Shoshannah White uses her practice to consider urgent environmental concerns. These photographs taken from the Arctic Circle explore the collective history that glacier ice holds and can reveal about environmental changes. White’s underwater photograph, Svalbard Iceberg #27, was taken during an artist residency in Svalbard, a Norwegian archipelago within the Arctic Circle. For the artist, her photographs of glacier ice captured not only its banal beauty, but the information hidden within its translucent layers. Contrasting with this exterior view, Barry Glacier Ice #2 and #5 highlight microscopic perspectives on her chosen subject. The photogram prints are made from glacier ice and reveal the material information obscured in Svalbard Iceberg #27. Together, these three photographs ("Barry Glacier Ice #2", "Barry Glacier Ice #5" and "Svalbard Iceberg #27"), provide us with a macro and micro-level investigation of the Artic and its environs and encourage us to consider humanity’s place and role in improving these conditions.
