Henry Kirchhoffer successfully exhibited his work, beginning in Cork in 1801 and then in Dublin where he joined the Royal Hibernian Academy. He exhibited this painting there in 1832. Here, Kirchhoffer celebrates Francis Johnston, the noted Irish architect. Seen through a curtained window and across an enclosed garden, the painting’s focal point is the tall Gothic belfrey that Johnston constructed for the purpose of bell ringing. It and its adjacent Gothic structure, however, were not true buildings, but follies—ephemeral structures built of pasteboard.
