Largely self-taught, Mary Goldsmith Scheier and Edwin Scheier mined forms and designs ranging from vernacular American pottery to Chinese porcelains. In 1941, they received their first critical attention after capturing national awards in juried exhibitions. The deep, thin-walled bowl combines Mary Scheier’s remarkable throwing skills with Edwin’s nearly translucent glaze. It was made between 1940 and 1960, when the Scheiers were based at the University of New Hampshire in Durham, where Edwin taught and Mary was artist-in-residence.
