Object Description

405 THE MOCKING OF CHRIST
To the right Christ sits wearing the mantle and carrying the scepter of his mocking. Four soldiers put the crown of thorns on his head with staves; a fifth kneels before him making a fist with his thumb between two fingers. At the left a bearded man with a staff converses with a beardless man who points to Christ. Further left, weapons, a shield, and helmet lean against a wall below a curtain. Behind, a group of onlookers standing next to a city wall on the right. Distant landscape; patterned floor.

Gilt bronze, bottom border intended for mounting, 128 X 160 mm.

The influence of Giovanni da Bologna and Adriaen de Vries indicates that this work is by a Netherlandish artist working perhaps in Prague.

Bibl.: Weber, no. 980.
