Object Description

416 THE FLAGELLATION
Christ, bound to a half-column, is being whipped by three men. At the left, a fourth man bends to tie a bundle of scourges. At the sides and on a balcony, eleven spectators. Among these at the left probably stands the High Priest. At the right a man in a feathered headdress reaches out to Christ. Architectural setting with patterned floor.

Copper, gilt, chased, 185 x 148 mm.

This composition is based on the same work as no. 360, although a few figures are added and some details changed. It is unclear, for example, why the man to the right wears a feathered headdress. Several details, for instance the headdress, make it possible that the relief was done in Spain. A silver gilt specimen at an art dealer's in Milan has different details and has been reworked by a goldsmith.

Bibl.: Weber, no. 1037.
