Object Description

389 Series: TWENTY-FOUR SCENES FROM OVID'S METAMORPHOSES
M. THE CALYDONIAN BOAR HUNT (Met. 8, 379-423)
Meleager spears the boar which Atalanta has just shot in the mouth with an arrow. A dog springs at the boar from the right. Behind Meleager, a tree; in the back- ground, a forested hill.

Bronze, 155 x 115 mm. Hole at top.

This depiction appears to be a cut-down version of a larger composition, since here only the head of the boar is included on the left. The higher quality of the modeling raises the question whether this relief properly belongs to this series. Certainly, however, the model for the relief originated in the same workshop in which the other reliefs were executed.

Bibl.: Weber, no. 860, 14.
