Object Description

389 Series: TWENTY-FOUR SCENES FROM OVID'S METAMORPHOSES
P. THE CONTEST BETWEEN ATALANTA AND HIPPOMENES (?) (Met. 10, 600-80)
Under some trees at the right runs a youth dressed in a costume in the antique manner and with a dog on a leash. He looks toward a woman, left, who stands with a dog at her feet.

Bronze, gilt, 177 x 121 mm.

Although this relief departs from the customary format, it undoubtedly belongs to the series. As the relief Aeneas Rescuing Anchises from Troy (Bowdoin collections; see no. 389A above) proves, the series does include plaquettes of various sizes.

Bibl.: Weber, no. 860, 17.
