Object Description

426 CERES
Ceres, wearing a belted cloak and fluttering scapulary strides to the right across a field. She carries a sheaf of wheat in her left hand and a bowl in her right. To the right, trees; to the left, a wheatfield and trees. Landscape with two small hills in the background.

Bronze, dia. 140 mm. Below, a narrow border, probably intended for placement in furniture or similar object.

Ceres is copied from a figure from the two well-known Seasons plaquettes, Franco-Flemish works of about 1600 (Weber, no. 736). It is presumed that the four figures of the two plaquettes were used as four individual plaquettes in a series for the decoration of an object.
