Object Description

389 Series: TWENTY-FOUR SCENES FROM OVID'S METAMORPHOSES
V. THE ABDUCTION OF HELENA (?) (Met. 12, 5, and 13, 200)
Two armored men carry the resisting Helena(?) toward a boat. At the right, a fallen warrior lies in front of a palace-like building; left, a large sailboat upon the high seas.

Bronze, gilt, 73 x 127 mm.

The main motif is reminiscent of an engraving by Marcantonio Raimondi (Bartsch 209) which has influenced at least one other plaquette composition (Weber, no. 493) and an engraved onyx in the Kunsthistorisches Museum, Vienna (cf. Tietze-Conrat, E., "Die Erfindung im Relief," Jahrbuch der Kunsthistorischen Sammlungen 35, Vienna 1919, p. 141).

Bibl.: Weber, no. 860, 23.
