Object Description

411B THE PENITENT SAINT PETER
Same composition as the above (no. 411A), though in decorated frame with angels' heads in the corners. At top, incised: C A R R E R A .

Bronze, traces of gilding, 123 x 101 mm. The side border of the original plaquette still visible within the frame.

It is uncertain to whom the inscription refers. For example, in the sixteenth and seventeenth centuries a family of painters named Carrera is documented in Italy and Spain (see Thieme-Becker 6, p. 69) and a seal engraver named Carrere was active in France in the 1590s (see Forrer i, p. 215).
