Object Description
361 MADONNA AND CHILD WITH SAINT JOHN
The Madonna, wearing richly decorated robes, sits facing three-quarters to right. On her left leg she holds the standing nude Christ Child. At lower left the young nude Saint John, holding a cross, stands cross-legged and looks upward. Architectural background.
Bronze, traces of gilt, 134 x 89 mm.
This relief is said by Molinier to be Venetian, by Bange and Braun to be in the manner of Sansovino. Middeldorf called it Florentine and wrote "the motif, in the last analysis, stems from Donatello and Luca della Robbia." Surely the artist was influenced by Sansovino, but not so much that it can be said that he worked in his manner.
Other specimens: (bronze) Berlin, Staatliche Museen; Venice, Museo Correr.
