Like his contemporary Winslow Homer, Harrison Bird Brown was enamored of the sea and made it the subject of many paintings during the latter half of the nineteenth century. Born in Portland, Brown spent much of his life in Maine. At the outset of his career, he worked as a sign painter before dedicating himself to the fine arts. He was one of the first American artists to paint on Monhegan Island in the Gulf of Maine and in the late 1850s began to exhibit regularly at exhibitions throughout the East. This view depicts Portland Harbor, a subject that he could see from his home in the city’s West End.
