An accomplished printmaker, Kenneth Hayes Miller taught at the Art Students League in New York City for four decades. He urged his students, including Reginald Marsh, Yasuo Kuniyoshi and Isabel Bishop, to "see in depth" and to draw subject matter from their surroundings. From their private studios on Union Square, in the heart of the 14th Street shopping district, Miller and Bishop were able to closely observe the crowds of people moving in and out of the many shops, offices, and restaurants. In Leaving the Shop, Miller represents not only a well-to-do mother and daughter pair, but also window displays of fashionable clothing, including cloche hats, constructed handbags, and drop-waist dresses. With linked arms, the women--the daughter already dressed in the latest fashion--emerge with only a small package and presumably move to the next store to continue their leisurely shopping outing.
