Mark di Suvero’s early success as one of the preeminent American sculptors of the twentieth century can be traced to his exhibitions in New York’s legendary Green Gallery, run by Richard Bellamy. After recovering from a severe accident the artist suffered during a day job on a construction site in 1960, which nearly crippled him, di Suvero continued to create works that caught the eyes of critics and collectors. The artist thanked one of these early supporters, the art critic and feminist activist Jill Johnston, who had discussed di Suvero’s work in Art News in the summer of 1963, by presenting her with the small welded sculpture exhibited here.
