19th century Victorian painter and designer
(Dronrijp, Friesland, 1836 - 1912, Wiesbaden)

Of Dutch birth, Alma Tadema entered the Antwerp Academy at the age of 16, working under Louis de Taye among others. In 1859 he began working in Baron Henri Leyes' studio in Antwerp, assisting on fresco series for the Antwerp Town Hall. Alma-Tadema moved to Brussels in 1865 and settled permanently in London in 1870, becoming a naturalized British citizen in 1873.
