Robert Cleaver Purdy

(Kentucky, 1911 - 1992)

Robert Cleaver Purdy was born on June 29, 1911 in Bradfordsville, KY. His family was devastated by the Great Depression. Purdy attended the John Herron School of Art (now part University of Indiana). He painted a mural for the WPA in New Albany, Miss. He studied one or two summers in Goose Rocks Beach with John Marin, where he improved his watercolor technique. He won a Beaux Art Medal. He was invited to teach but chose to pursue a career in New York City. He did some design work for Revlon, along with other freelance projects (including some work for the 1964 Worlds Fair) and spent many years in the design department of Macy's flagship store in New York.
