Vittore di Antonio Gambello (Vettore Camelio)

Vittore di Antonio Gambello

15th-16th century Italian sculptor and medalist
(ca. 1455 - 1537)

Sculptor, medalist, die engraver, jeweler, armorer. He is noted as a master of dies at the Venetian mint in 1484 and worked there until 1510. From 1513—16 he was engraver at the papal mint, but earlier papal medals have been attributed to him. From 1516-37 he was again in Venice, but probably did little work during the last decade of his life. Camelio was one of the earlier artists to experiment with striking medals from dies.
