Gaspare Moroni (Moroni-Mola)

Gaspare Moroni (Moroni-Mola)

(d. 1669)

From Milan, Moroni was the nephew of Gaspare Mola. Although he is first noted in 1633 as engraver at the Mantuan mint, the medal of Vincenzo II Gonzaga (d. 1627) is signed by him. Moroni later went to Rome where he had joined his uncle in partnership by 1637. He succeeded Mola as engraver to the papal mint and from 1640-65 executed the annual pontifical medals and most of the coins for Popes Urban VIII, Innocent X, Alexander VII and Clement IX. Girolamo Lucenti, who eventually succeeded him, became his assistant in 1668.
