Paolo Sanquirico

Paolo Sanquirico

(Villa di San Quirico, 1565 - 1630)

Sculptor, architect and medalist, born at Villa di San Quirico near Parma. He came to Rome as a young man and was a pupil of the sculptor Camillo Mariani and the mint master G. A. Moro. The majority of Sanquirico's medals are of Pope Paul V. He stopped making medals long before his death and worked primarily as a monumental sculptor (for example carving the statue of Paul V in S. Maria Maggiore) and portraitist in wax. See Forrer 5, pp. 331-32; N. Pelicelli in Thieme-Becker 29, p. 416; Bernhart, p. 74 (medal of G. B. Deti) ; Bulgari 2, p. 374; Pyke, p. 127. --- from The Molinari Collection, Andrea S. Norris and Ingrid Weber, Published by Bowdoin College, 1976
