Alessandro Cesati (Il Grechetto)

16th century Italian gem engraver and medalist
(before 1538 - after 1564)

Born in Cyprus about 1500, Cesati was in Rome in 1538 in the service of Alessandro Farnese. He was engraver at the papal mint from 1540 and worked also for the Farnese family. In 1561 he became mint master for the Duke o£ Savoy, but he returned to Cyprus in 1564. Cesati often used classical models and was highly praised by Vasari.
