Leonhard Posch

Leonhard Posch

(Tyrol, 1750 - 1831)

A wax sculptor, medalist and sculptor, Posch was born in the Tyrol and studied in Salzburg from 1766 with J. B. Hagenauer. In 1774 he went with Hagenauer to Vienna where he turned from monumental sculpture to wax portraits and medals. In Italy from 1793-95, he went to Berlin in 1804 and (except for a visit to Paris in 1810-14) remained active there as professor of modeling at the royal mint (1814) and a member of the Prussian Royal Academy (1816). Posch's medals, cast in iron, represent a monumental classicism which forms a bridge between the Austrian baroque style and the work of David d'Angers. See Forrer 4, pp. 669-73; 8, p. 144; F. Dworschak in Thieme-Becker 27, p. 293; Pyke, p. 144 (useful bibliographical references). --- from The Molinari Collection, Andrea S. Norris and Ingrid Weber, Published by Bowdoin College, 1976
