Peter Flotner

Peter Flotner

German 15th-16th century German sculptor, woodcarver and goldsmith
(ca. 1485 - 1546)

Flötner, Peter (German sculptor, woodcarver, goldsmith, ca.1485-1546) Flotner, born presumably about 1485 in Thurgau, Switzerland, became a citizen of Nuremberg on 8 August 1523, having apparently come there from Ansbach. He died on 23 November 1546, in Nuremberg. Flotner cut reliefs in stone and wood, designed architectural details, fountains, furniture, vessels, decorative compositions, and ornaments. Many of his sketches, like his illustrations and broadsides, were published as woodcuts. Architectural works and one sculpture are preserved and certified. Flotner, one of the most many-sided artists of the Renaissance, belonged to no guild. It is assumed that he had a period of training in Augsburg and a sojourn in Italy. His sketches and models were used by goldsmiths and artisans of almost every sort until well into the seventeenth century. Names: Flötner, Peter (preferred, index, V) Flattner, Peter (V) Fletner, Peter (V) Flodner, Peter (V) Flotner, Peter (V) Flettner, Peter (V)
