Pankraz Labenwolf

Pankraz Labenwolf

(1492 - 1563)

Pankraz Labenwolf, born in 1492, belonged to a renowned Nuremberg family of bronze casters. He died in 1563. His work shows a close relationship to that of the Vischers, in whose workshop he had his training. In 1519 he became master; in 1523 he had his own workshop; and in 1537 the city council allowed him to build a foundry. In his workshop, in addition to important bronze works, stencils were also made-that is, models for the chased patterns of goldsmiths. It is assumed that Labenwolf made casts only after the sketches and models of other artists, as, for example, is proved in the case of the silver altar of Cracow. The relationship to Peter Flotner is close. The "Meister des Nuernberger Rathausputto," whose name is unknown, made the wooden model (Nuremberg, Germanisches Museum) for the crowning figures of the columns of the fountain in the courtyard of the Nuremberg Town Hall, cast in 1557.
