Jules Clément Chaplain

Jules Clément Chaplain

19th century Beaux-Arts sculptor and medalist
(Mortagne, 1839 - 1909)

Born at Montagne, Chaplain entered the Ecole des Beaux-Arts in 1857 and studied with the sculptor Francois Jouffroy and the medalist Andre Oudine. He won the Rome Prize in 1863, and was in Italy from 1864-68. Returning to Paris, he exhibited extensively, and was a member of the Academie des Beaux-Arts from 1881. Chaplain worked as a sculptor, but he is best known for his medals. Inspired by the Italian Renaissance as well as contemporary sculptors, he made both cast and struck medals.
