Jack Delano was born in 1914 in Kiev, Ukraine. At the age of nine he emigrated to the United States and he was brought up in Philadelphia, PA where he studied music and graphic arts. As a photographer for the Farm Security Administration, a federal agricultural agency, he was sent
to Puerto Rico in 1941 on a three-month assignment to record the social conditions of the island country-side. In 1946, with the Guggenheim Fellowship grant to produce a book of photographs, he return to the island with his wife where they remained as permanent residents. Delano has
made notable contributions to the cultural life of Puerto Rico not only as a photographer, but also as a filmmaker, composer of classical music and, in collaboration with his wife, Irene as a book illustrator, designer and graphic artist.
