An artist who works mostly as a painter and printmaker, Daniel Heyman was honored with a 2010 Guggenheim Fellowship in fine arts and a 2009 Pew Fellowship in the Arts. Recent solo exhibitions include "Summer Fall Winter Spring" at Cade Tompkins Projects, Providence, RI; “Bearing Witness” -- a national touring show seen at Brush Gallery, St. Lawrence University, NY; Linfield College Art Gallery and the White Box Gallery in Portland, OR; Laband Gallery at Loyola Marymount University, CA; List Gallery of Swarthmore College, PA; and Zilkha Gallery at Wesleyan University, CT; “Abu Ghraib Detainee Interview Project” at the DePaul University Museum in Chicago, IL and “Eye Witness” at the University of Iowa Museum of Art, Iowa City, IA. His work has been included in important group shows around the US including at the Philadelphia Museum of Art, The Minneapolis Institute of the Arts, Rhode Island School of Design Art Museum, the Meade Museum at Amherst College and the Baltimore Museum of Art. Heyman's work is featured in Virginia Quarterly Review (“Art Born of the Need to Tell” by Laurel Reuter, 2007), Esquire (“The Ticking is the Bomb: A Memoir of Torture” by Nick Flynn, 2008), Afterimage 39 ("Imag(in)ing Abu Ghraib: Daniel Heyman's Detainee Portraits by Sabrina de Turk, 2011), Male Desire: Homosexual Desire in American Art (Abrams, J. Weinberg, 2005), and has been reviewed by The New York Times, Los Angeles Times, Art in America, The Philadelphia Inquirer, Art in Print, Art New England, artblog, The Hartford Courant, France Ouest, and The Sydney Morning Herald. Heyman earned an MFA from the University of Pennsylvania and is a cum laude graduate of Dartmouth College. Currently, Heyman teaches at Rhode Island School of Design, Princeton University, University of the Arts, and the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts. He is an officer of the Philagrafika Board of Directors. He is fluent in French, and lives with his husband Vincent in Philadelphia.
