Frans II is the most important and widely known member of a large family of Flemish painters. He created altarpieces and furniture panels, but was most famous for his small cabinet pictures which feature historical, mythological, and allegorical themes. He was an innovator of unusual themes and subject matter, including the "monkeys' kitchen" genre.
