A Bangor, Maine native, Eve Peri learned the needle arts as a young girl, creating a body of work by sewing, quilting, embroidery, and appliqué. She admired the textile traditions of world cultures and collected woven, embroidered, and other fabrics during her travels, especially in South America and Indonesia. She incorporated these textiles into her work During the mid-twentieth century, Peri lived in the midst of New York’s modernist art scene and also spent time in Paris, France. By embracing the fiber arts as a primary medium, Peri was often classified as an artist working in a craft tradition. Today, Peri is recognized as an equal to her painting peers. In a very singular way, she created collages and other works aligned with abstract expressionism, noted for their vibrant patterns, textures, and organic forms.
