Like Mary Cassatt a century earlier, Anne Harris, a Chicago-based artist, has demonstrated an interest throughout her career in portraying women and children at different points in their lives. In this composition, Harris depicts a newborn coming into the world. Though she often works directly from life, she also creates from memory, invents elements, and in this instance takes advantage of a series of snapshot photographs that this child’s father created during the delivery. For Harris, pastels and charcoal are ideal for depicting an infant’s body and the experience of a newborn’s arrival: “I like that pastel can exist very physically and densely on the paper but can also be very delicate and deal with the subtlety of nuances.”
