Reginald Marsh’s art was nurtured by his extensive encounters with historic European art. Whether he keenly observed the lives of the downtrodden on New York’s Bowery or followed the urban masses on their commute and into places of entertainment, his focus remained on the figure. In the late 1930s Marsh increasingly refrained from tempera painting, commenting, “Watercolors give clarity, and allow for better drawing.” This untitled watercolor, perhaps based on a visit to Coney Island, inserts almost classical figures into a gestural all-over composition--the waves--that would not look out of place in an abstract expressionist work.
