Per the James D. Julia Inc.'s Auction Catalogue (End of Summer Spectacular Maine Auction- 2010):
The hanging banner mounted to a round wood dowel with hanging loop having oil painted decoration on both sides with a light green later addition yarn fringe. One side with "WE ARE FREE MASONS; OUR SECRET IS INDUSTRY & SKILL." in black and cream letters with red and brown shadowing. Below the phrase is a collage of drafting tools including compass, square and other tools on a white silk background. The reverse with "WHEN HISTORY'S PAGE NO DATE CAN GIVE OF EMPIRES OVERTHROWN. OUR COUNTRY'S DEEDS AND OURS SHALL LIVE IN MONUMENTAL STONE." in black letters with brown and red shadowing against a white silk background.

Per the Maine Memory Network in conjunction with the Maine Historical Society - October 2015:
"We are Free Masons; our Secret is Industry & Skill" is the motto accompanying a drawing of tools used by Masons, Plasterers, Brick Makers and Stone Cutters," artisans who were part of the Maine Charitable Mechanic Association in Portland.

The group carried the banner in a parade Oct. 8, 1841 to help celebrate skilled artisans and civic pride.

The reverse of the banner reads, "When History's page no date can give Of Empires overthrown, Our Country's deeds and ours shall live In Monumental Stone."

William Capen Jr., a member of the Charitable Mechanic Association, painted the linen banner.
