Hi all,
I went to Special Collections and looked up some files regarding the bronze sculptures- there were several mentions of the sculptures in connection to the dedication of the Walker Art Building in 1894 as well as a letter from the artist, de Angelis to Miss Sofia Walker, who was clearly involved in commissioning the two pieces. Additionally, you'll see below these notes some images of these sculptures in marble, one in the Vatican Museum and the other in Ny Carlsberg Glyptotek, for comparison.
Just to fill in some more of the history of these pieces- there is probably still more to find, but this is a start!
Thanks,
Sarah

Hi all, I also wrote to Richard Lindemann in Special Collections today to see about any records of these sculptures (more from a historical perspective- looking for any note about their original commission etc.) from within the building files or other museum-related archives they have there. I'll stop by soon and can let you all know what I find.
Sarah

Dear colleagues,
To identify those gentlemen we might as well use their proper names. On the left is Sophocles, on the right (with scroll) Demosthenes. I am glad that we will take a good look at them this summer.
Joachim
