Known for his gestural abstraction, Charlie Clough matured artistically in the early 1970s in Buffalo, New York, alongside other members of the so-called “Pictures Generation.” Together with Robert Longo and Cindy Sherman, Clough helped establish Hallwalls Contemporary Art Center in Buffalo, New York in 1974. Interested in the associative potential of the application of paint, Clough explains that one of his artistic goals has been to “abandon illustrational strategies for paint-as-material processes generally, as established by Pollock and his progeny.” Clough deliberately seeks to mine metaphysical content in his work, including the nature of unity, freedom, truth, and nothingness. Enjoying a close friendship with Clough, the Vogels have collected his work in depth.
