In the early 1970s Lois Dodd was part of a group of artists, including Mercedes Matter and Philip Pearlstein, who met periodically in the studios of different friends around New York City to draw hired models. Dodd explained recently that Female Nude on Stomach—with Heater, 1972, Female Nude Seated on Yellow Green Sofa, 1974 and Female Nude Slumped on Blue Sofa, 1974 all part of Bowdoin's Collection are essentially the only works of their kind, as she rarely worked in pastel or represented the figure. In these three works, she employs a tight composition, as the figure’s limbs are seen extending past the frame. By using colored paper, she needs only a few expressive marks in pink, orange, and yellow to communicate the form. Though her primary subject since the 1950s has been the land, sky, and built structures, these drawings share her enthusiasm for vibrant color and bold forms.
