The Wabanaki people, inhabiting for millennia what is now the state of Maine, have long held a special relationship with the region’s land and waters. They held sacred meaning and provided natural resources for sustenance. Depicted here is Ironbound, a rugged island off Mount Desert Island, a place known to have been inhabited by the Wabanaki during seasonal migrations. By the time William Haseltine painted this view of Ironbound, however, the Wabanaki had been displaced by summer rusticators in resort communities throughout Mount Desert and the adjacent islands.
