Object Description
Per Laura Sprague 2/23/2022:
Rectangular molded platter with canted corners. Center is decorated with heraldic shield crowned by a bearded man wearing a turban. Arms are of three griffins' heads divided by a red band with lions or leopards passant. Rococo foliate scrolling decorates the edges of the shield. Famille rose color palette of pinks, light greens, blues, reds and yellows. Delicated chain border decorated inside edge of well. Some enamel colors have been abraded from surface.
The armorial appears in Joseph Edmondson, A Complete Body of Heraldry (London, England: Printed for the author by T. Spilsbury, 1780) Gardiner Arms are listed under The Arms of the Baronets of England. "GARDINER, of London. Pat. 24 Dec 1660. – Arms. Or, on a chevron gu. between three griffins heads erased az. two lions counter-passant or. – Crest. A mar.'s head proper, on his head a cap or, wreathed about the temples gu. and az."
