Object Description

Per Registrar, Laura J. Latman
Information shared by donor at time of gift was a schedule of Properties with the following details in conjunction with the donor’s appraisal by Jo Desmond, 5/29/2018 and noted:

This ivory netsuke depicts a black raven perched on top of a sun-bleached human skull. Carved from a single piece of ivory, the raven is stained black while the skull retains original ivory color.

This piece is one of others like them. The first was carved in 1977 when the artist was eighty. Considered a top artist. Meigyokusai was schooled in the accurate carving of skulls and the subject property is a fine example of his best works.
