Dine’s intensive drawing of his first wife Nancy, created over a period of two years and in different cities, exemplifies the artist’s rigorous and time-consuming construction, deconstruction, and reconstruction of his portraits. As Dine revealed, the process is not only rooted in vision but in feeling: “To have a range of emotions in just one specific drawing is something I hope for...This range of emotions is not about anger and fear and love and hate. It’s about the emotions that come from looking at something visually.”
