Portraits in pastel were fashionable in eighteenth-century Europe. This portrait by British artist William Hamilton depicts Jane Myhill, the Marchioness of Ely, an aristocrat from County Wexford in Ireland. Hamilton was well known for his painterly renditions of historical and literary scenes. He was also a prolific portraitist who often worked in pastel. From his studio in London, he portrayed the British elite, as well as popular figures from the theater.
