This meditative late painting does not attempt to represent local topography, but offers spiritual solace. The barren trees and almost monochrome tonalities of a meadow in late fall become an object of contemplation for two figures—a woman standing behind a seated man—who are loosely painted, nearly blending in with their surroundings. A farm in the background might provide shelter at night but is not drawing the couple home quite yet. For Inness, the spiritual writings of Emanuel Swedenborg provided encouragement to seek out correspondences between the material and spiritual realms.
