Arthur Dove, one of the earliest Americans to experiment with abstraction, found his inspiration in nature. “Centerport Series #1,” done in earth tones, was completed while the artist was living in an erstwhile post office located by a millpond in Centerport, Long Island, New York. By reducing the natural elements of his surroundings to their essential shapes, he found universal messages in front of his doorstep.
