Series: THE PASSION OF CHRIST
383B PIETA WITH PASSION SYMBOLS
Mary sits on a grassy mound beneath the cross, head bowed. She holds with both hands the body of Christ, which leans on her with outspread arms and sunken head. Hanging on or leaning against the cross are the Passion symbols: scourge, spear, tongs, crown of thorns, ladder, hammer, sponge and rod.
Lead, oval, 57 x 40 mm.
This widespread Pieta type is of Italian origin. Bange gave this plaquette to an Italian artist, while recognizing its connection with the preceding one.
