Object Description

381 PIETA WITH ANGELS
Mary sits at the foot of the cross, holding Christ's body across her lap, her arms encircling him, and holds both of his arms with her hands. Angels at right and left each hold one of Christ's arms. Landscape behind.

Bronze, dia. 78 mm.

This type has its origins in Italy (compare, for example, Bange, no. 945, pl. 97). Many variations exist (see nos. 380A ,B), each differing only slightly from the others. A stylistic relation to the work of Antonio Abondio, for example the Venus (F. Dworschak, Antonio Abondio, Trento 1958, p. iii) suggests an origin in the circle or imitators of Abondio.
Other specimens: Basel, Historisches Museum; Berlin, Staatliche Museen; Munich, Bayerisches Nationalmuseum.
