Object Description
17 ALFONSO V OF ARAGON (1394-1458), King of Naples and Sicily
Obv. Bust to right, over crown. Around, ALFONSVS . REX . REGIBVS . IMPERANS . ET . BELLORVM . VICTOR
Rev. Alfonso seated, crowned by Mars and Bellona. Around, VICTOREM REGNI MARS ET BELLONA CORONANT; on Hstel, CHRISTOPHORVS HIERIMIA
Lead, two holes at top, 75 mm. Very worn
The medal is generally dated shortly, if at all, after the death of Alfonso in 1458. Rosati suggests that it refers to the victory of Alfonso over the Angevins in 1442 but proposes no date for the making of the medal. The placing of the crown below the bust is borrowed from one of Pisanello's medals of Alfonso.
