370 CHRIST AND THE SAMARITAN WOMAN, ca. 1530-35
Christ, seated on a rock by a well, turns with outstretched arm toward the Samaritan woman, left, who bends over the well holding a rope attached to a pail. An ewer stands nearby. Far right, a group of persons appears from the woods. Behind, a forested mountain landscape with buildings.
Lead, 55 x 111 mm.
This plaquette is among a number from the artist's early period which Bange ("Zur Datierung von Peter Flotners Plakettenwerk," AMP 3 [1921/22], p. 46ff.) dates before 1537. Braun (p. 29, no. 6) believes that the composition was taken a second time by Flotner in a smaller scale to illustrate the Rivius (see Book 3, 1558 edition, p. 13). The plaquette was intended as furniture applique and used for a small case in bronze (see Lange, p. 145ff. and pl. 6, no. 9). The composition can be found on a ceremonial cup ("Prunkpokal") by the Augsburg monogrammist LS from ca. 1570-80 (Munich, Schatzkammer der Residenz, 1964 Catalogue, no. 576); on Sieburger flagons ("Schnellen") (M. L. Solon, The Ancient Art: Stoneware, London 1892, p. 99); and on a medal from Kremnitz of 1554 (Braun, no. 6).
