Object Description
Series: PUTTI AS MUSES
373 EUTERPE, ca. 1545
A nude putto walks to the left playing a shawm; an organ in right background.
Bronze, 48 x 32 mm. Considerably cut.
The series of putti as muses has been attributed to Peter Flotner. This author attributes it to the workshop of Pankraz Labenwolf, for instance, to a man like Meister des Nuernberger Rathausputto, since seven putti are simplified copies of the series of nine female muses of Flotner (Weber, no. 58). In addition, the figures in other examples in the series are inscribed, which is not customary for Flotner. The inscriptions are awkwardly placed on the picture and show errors.
