This medal was issued after the death of Maximilian II Emanuel as part of a commemorative series depicting events from contemporary German history. The medal’s subject refers to Maximillian II Emanuel’s famous victory over the Turks in the Siege of Belgrade during the Great Turkish War in 1688. The successful battle for Belgrade, considered the most well-defended and strategically critical city in the Ottoman Empire, encouraged the Christian alliance. The victory proved short-lived, however, as Ottoman forces successfully retook the city in 1690.
